Advent Candles Year 4 Narrative Lectionary

Advent Candle Suggestion: In our Church we do Candles as our Children’s Time, We have our small collection of children light the candles youngest to eldest (whoever is there), those who haven’t gone go first. It is impromptu, not planned. It saves on having to schedule and ensures that the candles are lit and we spend children’s time explaining the meaning of the candle and how it relates the story of the week. If you don’t have children, I bet you could do this with your deacons as well.

Week 1: Hope/Prophesy

God you whisper to us, when we dare not hope suggesting to us the impossible

Mortal do you think these bones can live?

God it is in your multitude of knowledge, that we say the answer back to you, you know

Speak hope to the bones

We will speak hope together

Come let us speak the hope of the Holy Spirit today, and Live!

Lighting Hymns: Live Into Hope, Taize: Bless the Lord my Soul, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence (v. 1)

Week 2: Peace/Purpose

God promises that all those who thirsts will drink, all those who hunger will be fed

Come, the banquet is set, all are invited

Truly peace shall reign, for everyone shall have enough

Come, and listen, so that you may live. I will make you an everlasting covenant

Who wants to taste and See the Lord?

Come, let us practice this peace today and everyday

Lighting Hymns: Comfort Comfort You My People, Taize Nada the Turbe, O Come O Come Emmanuel v. 3, God of Peace (to the tune of Silent Night)

Week 3: Joy/God’s Word

God we are ready for your Word

The Word was with God, and the Word was God

Your joy shines through troubles, more than just happiness, God’s Word is life sustaining Joy!

All things come to being through God, and without God not one thing came into being.

Each of us have a spark of that joy within us!

Come let us renew our joy with God!

Hymns: O Come O Come Emmanuel v. 2, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence v. 2 & 3, Joy to the World Taize: The Kingdom of God, O Come All Ye Faithful

Week 4: Love/Good News

Hymns: The First Nowell, What Child is This

God we are thankful you unleashed your love into the world

Good News has come

There is nothing like the love of God

Filling the world with good news

Reminding us that hope, joy and peace are possible, fulfilling the promises of the covenant

Come let us whisper that God is coming soon!

Hymn Suggestions: It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence v. 1 & 4, Come Thou Long Expected Jesus v 3 & 4, O Love that Wilt Not Let Me Go, Of the Father’s Love Begotten, Taize: Magnificat

Christmas

All is well, Christ is here

Hear the Good News of Great Joy.

Christ has come, the baby is here!

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Guardian, the Heir of Peace!

Come let us worship the Lord

Glory to God, One Earth Peace, and Goodwill towards humankind!

Advent: a silly moment

Lord forgive me
For entering
Into the
Advent/Christmas Debate

((I admit it I talked about advent vs Christmas hymns))

I was tired
And forgot that such opinions
Stir up much debate & advice
When really
I was just sharing things
In my context.

But I said they were true—. because they are for me

However really I trust
That everyone
Is doing their best
for their own circumstances

And that we are all waiting—or not For Christmas, and that somehow

Christ will arrive exactly on time,

No matter what songs we sing or when we decorate the tree

Because that’s the Christmas miracle—and I’m so thankful for that

As I admittedly pray this Advent prayer.
(Sometimes even before Thanksgiving).

Amen

Call to Worship

Our God is the God of Resurrection

God will never leave us

Our God is the God of peace

Come let us worship God!

Prayer of Confession: God we confess that sometimes your instructions confuse us. You tell us both to live our lives and to look towards heaven. You know we are only human, so it is difficult for us to do both at the same time. Forgive us when we get distracted or confuse. Remind us that practicing hope, and peace here on earth is worth it. And help us when we go astray, we pray. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon: God’s love is from everlasting to everlasting, know the truth in your heart: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

Prayer of the Day/Dedication: God it is a good thing you are the Prince of peace, and that you leave pieces of it for us to follow, because we definitely need help on that. Guide us to your peace today and everyday we pray. Amen.

Hymns: Take My Life, My Hope is Built on Nothing Less, O For a Closer Walk with God, Abide with Me, Lord Make Us Servants of Your Peace

Children: God promises peace. Ask the children to imagine what peace is like–help them to imagine peace as creativity not just silence or stillness. Discuss how we might practice peace now.

Shots & Curses: Thank God for Vaccines!

God, This is a word of Prayer

Of Thanksgiving! For vaccines for all the elementary Schoolers

The 5-11 year olds who have had to wait, 20 long months

Without friends and with masks.

With parents who loved them, and many grownups who acted not in their best interest–

This is a prayer for the kids who had to stay cooped up

all alone, or play only with their siblings and parents until they drove their parents batty

who had to do school (or try to) at home.

This is a prayer for all those kiddos who finally get those shots

and a continued prayers for the preschoolers and babies who can’t get theirs yet.

You know God, that I don’t use curse words much.

At the tender age of 7 I saw My Left Foot

And when the Main Character cursed, frustrated by his disability–

(even though of course I had already heard those words on the bus,

as my mom’s friend pointed out when she was worried about showing me the movie)

I learned that those words should be used in very important situations.

This is why I think getting a COVID shot is the perfect time to say

Fuck.

whether it’s to withstand the pain–or to to curse out all the time this interminably long wait has been.

Fuck,

Fuck Yeah.

A Scattered Prayer

God, this is a prayer

For the pieces of my brain

That don’t fit

Or make sense to me right now.

You know, God, that I do not like to be confused.

And I hate when my body does things without telling me.

I feel tattered, and frayed around the edges

And my thoughts are frayed bits of something, that I still can’t catch ahold of—

In truth my thoughts still want to fly apart

And so I’m scattering a prayer, like seeds

To grow into something,

Can you please tend it?

In the in-between?

And I will try not to worry, about what is lining up, and what isn’t,

And instead just trust,

That scattered prayers are ok today.

Take them off my hearts, and hold them in the palm of your hand

And remind me

That every scattering helps and counts

Take each scattered prayer, I pray.

Amen.

Trickle Down Grace: A Prayer

God, I’ve been thinking fiercely today,

about how you keep trying to convince us that there is no such thing

as trickle down grace.

You formed Adam and Eve out of your own breath,

Sharing the Holy Spirit of inspiration with us.

As Abram and Sarai wondered as immigrants

As God showed us, in no uncertain terms,

that the sacrifice of children, will never ever

be a demand of our God.

And gave us Jacob, the literal heel to show,

that no blessing needs to be tricked from God,

As the Hebrews in the desert were shown that God’s Providence

would be enough, and there was no need for greed.

God, you never were one to give your peoples scraps of grace.

God, I think we humans worry, about being stuck with only the scraps.

We worry that there isn’t enough grace to go around.

But when I have a need, the prayers flow in like water.

When I cry out, and my tears overwhelm me, I feel your voice crying with mine, indinguishable.

Because you have never been a trickle down God! You never just give us dribs and drabs!

You are an abundant, grace overflowing, there is always room for one more at the table God.

This means your grace is messy! It spills in uncontrollable fantastic ways! splashing upon unsuspecting bystanders, leaving a track that one can clearly see after that face.

Mighty God, how I love you messy and uncontrollable grace.

Thank you, for being the kind of God I want to worship. Thank you for splashing your grace everywhere. Help me to be a part of the splashing I pray.

Amen.

Holy Words: No and Yes

God help me,

to discern when to say no

So that I can also say yes.

Help me do the junk,

the stuff that has to get done anyway.

But also…..

Help me to know when to draw

the boundaries that need to be drawn.

To be healthy

To hold firm

to say

No.

Simply

as a complete sentence.

So that when I want to

Say Yes, to something that I am called to

To something that is fulfilling and right

that I can say Yes.

No to overdoing

Yes to stretching

No to bullies

Yes to God.

No to Bigotry

Yes to Welcome

No to busywork

Yes to upholding, enouraging and supporting

No to perfection

Yes to good enough

No to doing everything

Yes to help

God, I give thanks, for all the Holy Nos, and all the Holy Yeses

In my Life.

Amen.
