Narrative Lectionary: Prayers, Liturgy, Collects

Acts 2:1-21

Phil: 4:4-7

Call to Worship
The Lord is near
Rejoice in the Lord always, again I say rejoice
And here we are, all gathered in the name of Jesus, to hear the Word of Jesus Christ
Let us speak to God, each in our own way and tongue, so that God might hear our praise.

Prayer of Confession: (unison) Holy Spirit, we confess that new things share us. We confess that although we want to be welcoming, sometimes w have trouble putting it into practice. We confess that sometimes we feel awkward. Forgive us for the times we forget to listen closely to one another. Aide us, when we forget to accept help from each other. For we know that relationship is holy, so we pray that you teach us to truly work through the Holy Spirit to come together as church, today and everyday so we might truly be a Pentecost People. Amen

Assurance of Pardon: (Phil 4:6-7) Know this, when we worry, we can take everything to God in prayer, and supplication, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will be with you. Let us proclaim the truth to one another: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Amen

God loves each of as a mother hen protects her young
God alone is my rock and my salvation, and I shall never be shaken
God is our refuge, let us worship God today.

Prayer of Confession: (unison) Loving Jesus, if there is any encouragement from you, then help us not to do things from selfish ambition or conceit,, but let us instead do all things with humility. Help us to act not from our own interests, which are limited, but instead for the interests of others, loving each other as sibling in Christ, we pray. (Silent Confession). Amen

Assurance of Pardon: (Phil 2) Trust God at all times, knowing that God is our caring parent giving us consolation and sympathy, and assuring us in love the good news: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Amen

Prayer of Dedication: Let us go into the world encouraged by the power of the Holy Spirit, and proclaiming the joy of Jesus Christ to one another. Amen.

Prayers for Narrative Lectionary

Philippians 1:1-18a and Luke 9:46-48 or Psalm 133

Call to Worship

Grace and Peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
How good and pleasant it is when we live together in unity
Let us thank God, every time we think of one another.
For God’s blessings overflow. Come let us worship God together today.

Prayer of Confession: (unison) God, we confess that sometimes we forget to share God’s love. We keep God to ourselves, or we talk about God our of envy or rivalry, using religion as a tool for judgment. Teach us to share God out of love, we pray, fill us with rejoicing so we might be able to truly proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. (Silent Confession). Amen

Assurance of Pardon: (1Philippians 1:6) We are each, and every one of us are assured that the good work that God began in each of us, will be brought into completion, because of this we know the truth that we can tell one another: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Amen

Prayer of Dedication: Let us go into the world remembering to pray and rejoice in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Communion Prayer:
Heavenly God, you call us together, into communion, into church. You created us to live in unity with one another so that we might anoint one another, sealing your love with our very baptism. You teach us, over and over again, what this meal is. It is the foretaste of the kingdom banquet, the beginning of the meal we shall have where no one will be forgotten, where love will abound, where the kingdom of justice will become incarnate. Send your Holy Spirit onto these elements, we pray, transforming the bread and the liquid into your body and blood. Nourish us with this communion with you and one another, we pray, help us to taste and see the kingdom of God, so that when we leave the table, we might carry your kingdom out into the world we pray. Amen.

How to Care about #GA223 #PCUSA

My name is Katy Stenta and I’m the pastor of teeny tiny pastor 30 members, 60 congregants. I attended GA via twitter last year, when I broke my foot and was limited in the running around type of ministry I’m used to. I was so energized and excited about electing 2 women as CO-Moderators and our first African-American Clerk, gender-neutral bathrooms, etc.! I saw some problems (the Young Adult Advisory thing is still way weird and ageist, but still) I saw Vision 2020 unfold and thought the name for a committee that looks at the past and toward the future was perfect!

“The intention is there would be a new vision for the denomination” by the General Assembly in 2020, the proposal states. https://pres-outlook.org/2016/06/way-forward-committee-approves-2020-vision-team/ I’m ready for the vision.

But somehow, we are back to structure. And although it does affect me and my church, I cannot begin to explain what is going on to my church other than “we are trying to restructure.”

But I’d rather be telling my church “we as a denomination are finding our vision”

We with missionaries across the globe, we with a deep history of translating Bibles. We with our Belhar Confession, and our hope to address POC, queer, white culture, gun violence, economic injustice, hunger, etc. We, with more money than small nations are looking at our gifts. I want to say that we are doing the work of faith seeking understanding, that we are providing access to God to ALL people. We are becoming the denomination to go to learn about God.

I want us to be saying “We could plant 100 churches tomorrow if we wanted to”

“We could support a college intern at every church, to help them pay off their student loans and give them leadership skills for their passion”

I want to be able to say “Every local church is a welcome map, with a website that gives salient information about the neighborhood and area to every family in the community”

I want us to have denomination wide advocacy about racism and gun violence in a way that ties us together.

What if we had courses at every church and Louisville as a place to learn about God

I want us to be infinitely supportive of all our children going to camp, of all the chaplains of college and hospital ministries.

I want us to be actively training people to help our ageing population, and our special needs community.

I want us to be just place to work, where people say “go work for the Presbyterians, because they are awesome”

There are so many ideas we can do, and these are just mine. I want us to be in a position to do these great things and so many other, very doable things.

Why do I love church? Because it has the most potential to empower anyone, ANYONE, to do good works. If you have a good idea, church oughtta be a place where you can try to pursue. And age matters (less), Paperwork matters (less), we are still working on issues of justice but if you wanted to truly help people and got a couple of people on your team, church is a great place to pursue that passion.

And I don’t know what to do with a structure conversation which I barely can understand, despite being well-educated and trying to follow it.

I want us to get the structure to a place where it can work for us instead of obsessing about it.

And I am a born and raised Presbyterian, I love decent and in order. I love structures, I am a list person, I recite my schedule constantly, and I rely heavily on having a piece of paper for everything I do (like every stereotypical Presbyterian).

However, I know we can do better than this. This is not a plea to stop the structure conversation, but to try, our hardest, to move beyond it. Do you know HOW MANY PEOPLE applied to be on 2020 Vision Team? There are that many people excited for vision, excited to become the faith seeking understanding church, excited about what is just beyond the horizon.

We have so much potential, how can we help to pursue it?

Narrative Lectionary: Unknown #God Thoughts

I remember asking about all those people who didn’t know about God as a precocious Pastor’s Kid back in the day. I must have been at least 6, maybe older. My parents, obliquely, referred to Acts 17, letting me know that people have ways to know God even if they don’t have the same information […]

Call to Worship
When the idols surrounding us, distress us.
We come seeking God
When we talk to the unknown one
We come seeking God
When we wonder at how we live, and move and breathe.
We come seeking God. Come let us seek God together starting with worship, so that we might seek God throughout our lives.

Prayer of Confession: (unison) God, we confess that we are surrounded by idols, we confess that we do not like “the unknown” so we make things feel safe, putting them in stereotypes or boxes, trying to master knowledge of all things. I confess that I don’t always know how to worship, because faith and God still remain a mystery to me. Comfort me, lord, teach me how to wonder and hope at your grace I pray. (Silent Confession). Amen

Assurance of Pardon: (Romans 8:34) Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us. Friends, believe the good news of the gospel. People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Amen

Prayer of Dedication: Let us go into the world dedicating ourselves to you, and teaching people about that they too the offspring of God. Amen.

#Christianity, you keep saying that word, I don’t think it means what you think it means

A timely reminder of what Christianity actually is to me

katyandtheword's avatarkatyandtheword

1. Christianity to me isn’t about finding all the answers, but asking the essential questions (look at the Gospel its people asking Christ ?s and Christ asking people ?s) gathering together and acknowledging that God is bigger and greater than our understanding of things, and we’d rather see thing more God’s way than our own way, because our way is too small

2. Church is a the practice of community and worship so that when moments of extreme trouble come, you have a healthy way to bring them to God and process them. (Like fire drills). Every week isn’t revolutionary but every week is important.

3. Church is about community, there are few places where we commit to practice community with whoever comes thru the door Church is a practicum in faith just as its a place to explore spirituality.

4. Prayer is the ongoing conversation between you and God…

Call to Worship

Lord, you have opened the door for us
Help us to come out, blinking, into the light
Lord the resurrection is the beginning of healing
Let us celebrate and share the resurrection with one another in worship here today.

Prayer of Confession: (unison) Mighty God, we confess that we feel the weight of our chains. Our sorrow and suffering, our prejudices and petty judgements, our hurts and helplessness. Each one of us has something binding us. Give us the hope and inspiration that we need to live life freed from chains we pray. (Silent Confession). Amen

Assurance of Pardon:We know that even when our persecutions seem too great, you God are stronger than any chains that try to bind us. Your resurrection frees us from all prisons. Hear the good news, in Jesus Christ we are freed: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Amen

Prayer of Dedication: Let us go into the world free children of God, energized by hope and empowered to tell the good news, passing the freedom of justice to every person we meet! Amen.

Also anyone else have this running thru their head?
